Artist statement
As a former lawyer, rules and regulations played a dominant role in her life. As an artist, MC finds it especially liberating to play, “mash it up” and let the process lead the way. She uses mixed media, acrylics and gold to explore the interplay between abstract and figurative, on both canvas and paper. MC also enjoys photographing as an important part of her artistic expression.
Deeply inspired by Mother Earth, MC is fascinated by nature’s palette and motifs, in which she finds escape from everyday life and where she can breathe. MC challenges today’s hectic life by observing a deceptively simple single flower, accessible for everyone. She asks us to consider, what feelings arise? And then to examine the flower’s hue, intensity, value and temperature – to smell, breathe and then let go.
In her “POPPY love” collection consisting of many individual poppies, the poppies represent life. The poppy, with its thin stem, bends in the storm but afterward it stands just as straight. “You can bend, but not break” - is MC’s motto in life.
MC is also profoundly interested in the body and soul as a whole. As a woman living with chronic pain, the peace she finds when making art is profound. This is when time stands still for her. The experience of art has always been visceral for MC. She recalls as a child feeling art with her whole body. And today she still gets an overwhelming feeling in her chest when she sees art that excites her. For MC art made from the heart is a direct way to communicate from one soul to another soul, across language and time, like her favorite piece “La chambre bleue” made by Suzanne Valadon over 100 years ago.
Descartes said, “I think, therefore I am”. But for MC it is “I draw, therefore I am”.
